At Todmorden High School we are committed to ensuring that fundamental British Values are embedded throughout the school and the curriculum.  We focus on the following:

Democracy To ensure students understand democracy and its importance.  To encourage students to support and participate in the democratic processes in England and understand how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process.
Rule of Law To understand that people hold different views about what is right and wrong however everyone living in England are subject to its law.
Individual Liberty To ensure that our students understand that they, and all other citizens have the right to express themselves and their views freely.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance To respect others and their views and create harmony between different cultural traditions by encouraging students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.
Friendship and Loyalty To create an environment which fosters and encourages friendship and loyalty amongst students and their peers.
Integrity To be honest, have strong moral principles and to stand by these principles.
Community To teach students the importance of community and playing an active and positive part of community.
Charity To encourage our students to be charitable by promoting causes and actively fundraising for causes that are important to them.
Altruism To encourage students to undertake selfless acts for the benefit and welfare of others.
Leadership To ensure that all students understand their own leadership style and to nurture this so that students understand how to lead and work as part of a team.

The ‘Prevent’ strategy

The prevent strategy is nationwide and forms part of the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy.  ‘Prevent’ aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism and each police force within the country has a unit which is focussed on the ‘prevent’ strategy.

West Yorkshire Police’s Prevent unit have been into school to deliver training and to raise awareness to both students and staff.  You can find out more about the ‘Prevent’ strategy via the documents below.
