Technology

Meet our Technology department. Technology gives young people the skills and abilities to engage positively with the designed and made world and to harness the benefits of technology. They learn how products and systems are designed and manufactured, how to be innovative and to make creative use of a variety of resources including digital technologies, to improve the world around them.

Please view our ‘Curriculum’ page to find out about the Technology curriculum at KS3 and 4.

I‘ve taught in inner city London at City and Islington and William Morris Academy; at Loreto College in Manchester, all big Sixth Form colleges. I’ve taught in Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, a small Schools Sixth Form in Burnley, before coming to teach in Todmorden. I’ve been teaching for 18 years, longer than most of our pupils have been alive!

I‘m teacher because I enjoy helping young people get the best possible start in life. Education is mandatory, but it doesn’t have to be unpleasant! I want people to learn and enjoy it too! I love it when when students start to analyse, start to see things for themselves, yes its great to see students remembering things you‘ve told them, but getting students to think for themselves, that’s great. One of the things I love about Media Studies is its relevance. Like most new subjects it has its critics, much in the same way English Literature did when that was introduced, "what can you learn by looking at the works of Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde"?

Students can learn a lot about the world around them by understanding how the media works, how advertising and marketing influence us. Its also really rewarding to see students put their understanding into practical projects, to have a go at something a little more creative than usual.
I‘ve been at Todmorden High School for three years now, and I’ve seen students enter as fresh faced year 7 students now start on their GCSEs which for me is really rewarding being much more used to see sixth formers quickly come and go. But the constant throughout it all is the fact that the students are so nice here.

The atmosphere here at Todmorden High School is really happy and harmonious and that is not something you can say about every school!
